What ages do you teach?
We teach students from age 5 – 16.
We have specialist teachers in Early Years, Primary and Secondary. GCSE students are taught separate subjects by different teachers, as they need the specialism that each of the teachers provides; whereas Early Years, Primary and early Secondary students can often be taught English and Maths within the same lesson.
What subjects do you teach?
We help students to achieve their potential in English, Maths and Science, from Early Years to Secondary. We also help to prepare children for the 11+, SATs and GCSE exams, and have seen a large increase in students with dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia.
Who will teach my child?
Your child will be taught by a specialist teacher in the required area. We try our best to make sure that your child will always have the same teacher, but staff sickness, etc. can mean that we sometimes need to place them with another member of staff. As we also have teaching assistants, we can ensure that our child will always have someone who they are familiar with within their lesson.
How much does it cost?
Each 80 minute lesson with a teacher and teaching assistant costs £27. Discounts are offered for family groups and block bookings, but all discounts are subject to the full payment being made before the lesson begins. We are OFSTED registered so you may be able to save money with Childcare Vouchers or Working Tax Credits.
Do you have parent consultations?
We do not have formal parent consultations, but we do reassess the students in January and June. This provides the basis of our twice yearly reports which are emailed directly to parents detailing the child’s progress and the next steps to be taken.
Will you tell my child’s teacher that they are having tuition?
No! This is YOUR choice and only you can make this decision. Some parents prefer to keep the tuition and every-day schooling totally separate, while others ask class teachers to email us detailing the areas that they would like us to work on. We will never contact our child’s school without your permission.
How long will they need tuition for?
We cannot give a definite answer to this question, as every child is different and learns at a different rate. We monitor your child’s progress and alter planning for them every week, ensuring the best value for money, and we can always let you know how far behind we feel that your child is in relation to others of a similar age.
What if we decide that we no longer wish to attend?
We ask that you provide two weeks notice before leaving. We do not charge for our assessment and feel that this is a fair length of time.
My child wants to be taught at home. Will you come to our house?
All tutoring at BTC is completed within the Centre. This allows us to help your child to focus in an educational environment and avoids the distractions of being at home. It also means that all of our resources are readily available, ensuring the best tuition for your child.
How long is a lesson?
We teach 80 minute lessons, broken down into activities which are 10-15 minutes long. A short break for a drink, biscuit and chat is given after 40 minutes, which allows the students to socialise in a specific time frame and avoids unnecessary chatter during the lessons. The short activities mean that even 5 year olds can focus for the full 80 minutes, plus the mixture of written activities, computer tasks, learning games and 1-2-1 teaching time means that there is literally something for everyone.
When are you open?
Lessons for Year 1 – 8 take place at 4.15pm from Monday to Friday, 5.40pm from Monday to Thursday, and at 10am, 11.30am, 1.00pm and 2.30pm on Saturdays. We are closed on Sundays, but have 4 mock 11+ exams towards the end of the year in preparation for the January exams in Bolton School.
GCSE Science is held on Mondays at 5.40pm and Saturday at 2.30pm.
GCSE English is held on Monday – Thursday at 5.40pm and Saturdays.
GCSE Maths is held on Tuesday – Thursday at 5.40pm and Saturdays at 10am, 11.30am and 1pm.
We recommend that 5 and 6 year olds, especially those who are finding school difficult, attend on Saturdays to take advantage of our Early Years Specialist, though we are also able to accommodate them during the week.
How much homework will my child get?
This will vary depending upon their age and ability. We usually limit it to approximately 30 minutes per week, but 11+ students (and those studying towards specific exams) may have a little extra to help them achieve their full potential.
