Reading and writing are perhaps two of the essential skills of life. However, for many children this is a trying and confusing time where the anxiety and stress felt by the child also affects the parent. We try to put the fun back into the subject and build confidence in reading, writing, spelling and comprehension. We concentrate on phonics, spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary within our lessons, giving a wide range of activities on the computer, on paper or as a game.
Most of the students that we tutor in English find comprehension difficult. Being able to understand what is required from each question, and then answer it in a clear and concise way, is a skill in itself. English language is about acquiring skills (reading and writing) and then using them effectively.
We can teach students how to answer a question, how to understand exactly what is being asked for and how to write it for the examiner. Spelling, punctuation and grammar is now marked across many subjects, meaning that a good grasp of these areas is crucial to every student. We teach fluency and structure in essay writing and aim to produce a well-rounded student at the end of their course.
Literature and poetry are also taught at BTC, and our specialist teachers can help students to develop their own writing style, which is essential in ‘standing out’ in their exam.We use a variety of resources to teach English Language and Literature, including past papers which are marked using the criteria of the required exam board.
