Links for Parents

Dear Parents,

Many of you often ask if we can help with your child’s homework due to a variety of reasons/ difficulties at home. As I came across these websites, whilst updating our web page and facebook page, I immediately thought of you! Please feel free to ‘like’ our facebook page (Bolton Tuition Centre) and keep up to date with any of our special offers.

  1. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools

This is a very useful website for children, parents and teachers. I especially like the bitesize feature that breaks down the KS1, KS2, KS3 and GCSE curriculum into manageable chunks of English, Maths and Science.

  1. http://www.howstuffworks.com

How Stuff Works is a place for you and your child! Here you will find informative articles and answers to those puzzling science homework questions. The articles contain lots of diagrams, fun animations and photos to illustrate the concepts taught. This site is for curious people who wonder about things.

  1. http://www.mathsisfun.com/

This is a great website, if you understand the basic concepts of Maths. The content is aimed at KS3 and KS4; however, as it deals with the basics of a topic, it is also useful for some aspects of KS2. There is a useful dictionary of Maths vocabulary, with easy to understand definitions.

  1. http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com

If it is weird and wonderful facts that you are looking for, then this is the site for you! It has a searchable database of record-breaking feats. There is something for everyone; from the longest chain of people licking lollipops, to the faster knitter. The unusual is there to be found.

  1. http://www.clubs-kids.scholastic.co.uk/

If it is books that you want to find out about, then this is the site for you. It is packed full of book reviews and author biographies. The book wizard will even suggest a book you might like based upon a poll that you take.

  1. http://www.wordle.net/

Here is a fun way to approach a spelling list or piece of writing. Wordle is a toy for generating ‘word clouds’ from text that you provide. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts and colour schemes. The results are good enough to frame!

  1. http://www.visuwords.com

Visuwords is an online graphical dictionary – look up words to find their meanings and associations with other words and concepts. It is a dictionary and thesaurus rolled into one and it will also help you and your child with tricky grammatical puzzles.

  1. http://www.switchzoo.com/

Not only will this site provide you with some highlighted relief from homework, children will also learn some amazing animal facts. Create your own fantasy animals by combining your favourites and then letting the computer generate something weird and wonderful!

  1. http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/games/atoz/#/lb/alphablocks/alphablocksgames

If your child is in lower primary then you will be familiar with phonics, but you may worry that you are not using the correct sounds. This website helps your child to practice sounds correctly. The games and animations mean that they don’t even realise that they are learning!

You can find these links on our Useful Link page where we will keep you up-to-date with sites to help your child.

I hope that you find this information helpful. Please do not hesitate to ask for any other information in the future and I will endeavour to help as much as possible.
